Are you a victim?

What should you do if you feel like you have been harassed and discriminated against?

The University encourages all parties to resolve their concerns on an informal basis if possible. Problem-solving processes on campus are offered by various University offices, such as the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, the Ombuds Office, the Office of the Dean of Students. Additional resources include the Faculty Advisory Committee, the Professional Advisory Committee, the Civil Service appeal procedures, and negotiated grievance procedures in collective bargaining agreements.

However, if informal attempts are not successful, or if a person does not want to explore an informal means by which to address his or her concerns, the University is committed to providing prompt and effective resolution to incidents of alleged discrimination or harassment. Persons who wish to purse a formal complaint may do so by utilizing the University's Policy and Procedure for Addressing Discrimination and Harassment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A copy of these procedures may be obtained from various University offices, including the Office of the Provost, Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, the Ombuds Office, Academic Human Resources and Personnel Services Office. In addition, the procedures can be obtained by visiting www.admin.uiuc.edu/cam/CAM/ix/ix-b/ix-b-3.html

Remember, it is always best to tell the person you believe is harassing you or discriminating against you that you don’t like his or her behavior and you want it to stop. You can do this in person, by telephone, or by letter. It’s not easy to confront harassers, but it’s important. There are situations where this may be difficult to do and it may be best to seek guidance from appropriate University officials. There are many University offices in which to receive assistance; all you have to do is ask for help.
