These awards, one for a faculty member or an individual with a non-primary advising role and one for a professional academic advisor, are designed to foster and reward excellence in undergraduate academic advising. Each consists of $2,000 for the personal use of the individual(s) selected to receive it.

Eligibility

Any faculty member or academic staff member who has not received notice of nonreappointment and who has served as an academic advisor at the undergraduate level on the campus for at least four full semesters (excluding summers) prior to nomination for this award is eligible for consideration.  Graduate assistant advisors are not eligible.  Once a person has received this award, he or she will not be eligible for nomination during the next five-year period.

Criteria

The primary criterion for selection will be evidence that the advisor has had a major impact on undergraduate students, and on their intellectual development, through sustained academic advising relationships.  It is expected that evidence of consistently excellent performance will be provided, as well as evidence of significant and lasting impact on students.

Nominations

Colleges may wish to capitalize on existing college-level advising award programs to select nominees for the campus-level award. Thus, it is expected that papers will be submitted in different formats and following somewhat different evaluative procedures.  However, the following information is requested:

  1. A standard cover page including the name of the nominee, department, rank, and years at the University.

  2. A narrative statement of nomination presenting the case for the nominee.  This should describe briefly the importance of the nominee's advising activities to the overall instructional mission of the unit, the comments of students and departmental colleagues, and the nominee's overall impact on current and former students.

  3. Student evaluation of the quality of advising based on a broad cross-section of advisees.  (For example, a paper-and-pencil survey or a phone survey.)

  4. Not more than four letters of support from students.

  5. A short personal statement by the nominee concerning her or his goals for and approaches to advising, not to exceed two pages.

The nomination procedure should involve undergraduate students as much as possible, with departmental and college circumstances dictating the best means to do so.

Nominations are not to exceed five pages (excluding the cover sheet and four letters.)  Two copies of each nomination are to be submitted to the Office of the Provost, 208 Swanlund Administration Building.  The campus selection process is overseen by the Teaching Advancement Board, and is advisory to the Provost.
