Swanlund Endowed Chair: Arthur Kramer
Arthur Kramer received his Ph.D. in 1984 in Cognitive/Experimental Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain. Since that time, he has worked on a variety of research topics in Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Human Factors at the University of Illinois and elsewhere. Kramer’s current research is focused both on the understanding of the mechanisms which explain age-related changes in cognition and brain function as well as interventions, such as exercise and cognitive training, that have shown promise in enhancing older adults’ cognitive and mental function. He currently holds appointments in the Department of Psychology, the University of Illinois Neuroscience program, the Institute of Aviation, and the Beckman Institute where he has served as the Co-Chair for the Human-Computer Interaction main research theme since 1998. He is also the Director of the Biomedical Imaging Center and Co-Director of the NIH Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Illinois. Kramer served as an Associate Editor of Perception and Psychophysics from 1993 to 1999 and he is currently a member of 7 editorial boards. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, a member of the executive committee of the International Society of Attention & Performance, and a recent recipient of an NIH 10 year merit award. Kramer’s research has been featured in a long list of print, radio and electronic media including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, CBS Evening News, Today Show, NPR, and his personal favorite, Saturday Night Live.
