Gutgsell Endowed Professor: John A. Gerlt
John A. Gerlt is Gutgsell Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard. Professor Gerlt was on the faculty at Yale and the University of Maryland, College Park before assuming the position of Head of the Department of Biochemistry. His research program on “genomic enzymology” utilizes evolutionary relationships as deduced from amino acid sequences of enzymes to understand the structural bases for their functional diversity.
